Golf II Diesel 1989

Hello Volkswagen enthousiasts, For a contest I need to know what Diesel technology Volkswagen introduced as the first manufacturer in the world in the Golf II in

1989, was it:

- Turbo Diesel

- Diesel with catalyst

- Direct Injection Diesel

My guess after searching using Google is Injection. Hope you can help me.

I'm going to say it's Diesel with catalyst by process of elimination.

VW made Turbo Diesels as early as the early 1980s, possibly even earlier.

Direct Injection diesels are the TDI and SDI diesels that hit the market around 1996 or so.

I'd say it's Diesel with catalyst because, at least in the US market, the "ECOdiesel" Jetta was introduced for the 1991 model year. While we didn't get such a setup in the Golf, I'd say that given the time frame that in 1989 (probably for the model year 1990) VW most likely introduced the diesel-with-catalyst.

I would agree that it is the diesel with a catalytic converter. It certainly is not turbo diesel, my 1983 Automobile Revue already lists a

1.6 l turbo diesel (70 bhp) >

As another poster said it's most likely a EchoDiesel that we got in jetta's in 91-92. However it does have a small turbo! Not to give it more power but to add more air to the exhaust for the catalitic converter. They did not have a boost diaphram on the pumplike the normal turbos. The intake runners in the head had a screw like thing to swirl the air to get better air flow on the exhaust stroke (as I recall). They had 3 hp more then the older 1.6 normally asperiated engines.

Wrongo Dude! All vw diesels in the US before the 96 Passat tdi were INdirect injected and had combustion prechamders.

Well, when *everyone else in the world* refers to direct injection, they mean direct injectors on each cylinder, without prechambers.

Everybody who contributed in this thread,

Thank you all for reactions on my request for help. Not everyone agrees as far as I can conclude, but going for the Catalyst is the answer for me.

See you again maybe, Pim Clotscher

Can you repeat this in English, please? Or add some meaningful content?
