I certainly can understand your feelings about the con artists at Sunnyvale VW. The guy at the parts counter is great, though. Very helpful and really knows his stuff.

I have had very positive experience with Steve Smith Auto Service in Mountain View

He works on all makes, notonly VW.

My VW friends tell me good things about New Dimensions in Santa Clara

but I have never used them myself. Isis an independent VW shop. They are right next door is the servicedepartment of Steven's Creek VW.

Parts guys generally are pretty friendly. They know their job is easy and so they are having fun doing it.

This would be my pick. JMHO....

Uh, stay away from tune shops. They will rape you very nicely of course and you don't ever want to have a tune shop do normal stuff because they will get overzealous because they need the volume in service. IMHO stay away.

If you need something specifically done that requires a special art and it's tune specific then a tune shop is the way to go. As long as you keep it very specific and you don't want to do the job yourself. Get some estimates that are lower from other places before you go to the most convenient place. You can barter them down to that price.

Oh did you know drinking beer and reading RAMVW is very entertaining. :-) Weren't you in "Lost in Space". What's your phone number. You're cute. :)

New Dimensions on De la Cruz in Santa Clara. I've been going to them for about seven years-- very good.

New Dimensions is not a tune-up shop, they are a VW specialist who does everything from performance upgrades to repairs of all sorts. I took my ordinary Jetta there for years (no longer in the area) and can enthusiastically recommend the place. They did what was necessary and didn't do what wasn't, thoroughly competent and, as far as I could tell, honest. You couldn't ask for more in a shop.
