GTI VR6 95 A/C Troubles

Have a 95 GTI VR6 with about 120K from new. A/C has been great so far but lately its been doing some really strange things. In the mornings after a cool evening it won't cool at all. Later in the day some cooling but not much. Before it went from 90 something on the dash vent to about 58 in about 5 minutes. Now its pretty lukewarm. Compressor seems to be working - hear it sounds a little noisy but not more than usual. Felt the low pressure line near expansion valve and its a little cold but not frigid. Bought a recharge kit with gauge and the reading according to the gauge is within limits. When the gauge is connected and engine is off gauge moves up and when engine on and AC on full gauge returns to the "normal" level but no major cooling going on. Seems like I'm getting something but its not as cold as it was a few weeks ago. Bad compressor or something else electrical? If it were a bad compressor would it show a normal charge when its running since the gauge does move from off to A/C on. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Heya, I have similar issues with mine. The culprit appears to be the hi-lo pressure switch at the receiver-drier and its corroded connection/plug. The plug corrodes and allows coolant to leak, at the same time it operates intermittantly, cutting out the compressor clutch. Even when the compressor is tunring the clutch is popping in and out so no real cooling is being done...

On 2.0 engines, there's a coolant temperature sensor (two wires, I think) that will cut the A/C if the engine heats gets too high. If your car also has one (I assume it does), the sensor may be malfunctioning. Bridge the sensor terminals and see. On the 2.0, the sensor is located on the same fitting/flange (at the driver's end of the cylinder head) as the four wire coolant sensor that supplies temperature info to the computer.
