HVAC backlight

I have a 2003 Jetta 1.8T (with standard climate control, not the auto. system). A couple months ago, the backlight for the HVAC controls went out. It would sometimes come on, but not much. Not a big deal; you just have to adjust temp. control and which vents are being used by feel. I figured it would be expensive to fix, so didn't think much of it. I had the car in to the dealer for routine maintenance, and made an off-hand comment about the light. They said it was just a bulb, and with labor, they could replace it for around $15. So I figured what the heck, have them fix it while they have the car.

It worked fine for a few days, then it became very intermittent. So I naturally believe it is more related to a loose connection, rather than a bad bulb. How easy is it for me to get to where the bulb is for this light to see if anything is loose? I surely don't have to take the whole dash apart, but what do I need to remove to get in there?

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I pulled the knob and checked the bulb. The bulb is fine, as it does work. It seems that it was making poor contact, though, as it was sporadic. I pulled one of the metal contacts on the bulb out a little further, and now it seems to be making constant contact and doesn't go on and off when I push the fan speed knob, like before. Hopefully it will stay this way now!
