Hydraulic tappets on a Type 25?

Hi all,

A couple of questions for you from a newbie. My big green 1984 Type

25 1.9L petrol wasserboxen is at the garage at the moment having it's exhaust fixed ready for the 2005 season to start.

On a trip back to Manchester from Scotland a month ago, I noticed after stopping for fuel in Bolton that there was a much louder roar from the back than normal and correctly deduced that something had finally given way on the exhaust - I had been expecting it go to for sometime as the previous owner had left it outside to get rusty and was glad that it happened so close to home. I made it back to the lockup fine and arranged for the exhaust to be fixed today.

When driving it from it's lockup to the mechanic yesterday however, I noticed that the tappets sounded really loud. This has also been flagged up as an issue at the previous service, however, I've not managed to get a concrete answer to the following:

  1. Does the van have hydraulic tappets?
  2. If so, why are they loud - shouldn't they readjust themselves?
  3. If not - should I get them adjusted by a mechanic (I couldn't do this myself for fear of breaking something)
  4. What is the problem with the tappets being loud anyway - is it just an annoyance solved by turning the stereo up, or is it indicative of something more serious going on?

Is there anyone out there who can answer any of these questions? All answers recieved gratefully - useful answers will earn you a stubby if I see you out there this Easter Weekend!

I'm not familiar with the Wasserboxer engines so I don't know if they are hydraulic or not but they can get loud either from just age (although I wouldn't think it'd be that sudden) or if they're running dry. Make sure your oil is clean and your filter is not plugged. If it's been a while since you've had an oil change, just change the oil. If that doesn't help, you might have a bad oil pump and they're not getting enough oil pressure.
