Jetta gas cap spring-loaded door...

My 2000 Jetta GLS has a new annoying problem. Just behind the gas cap is a small cap/door that is spring-loaded closed. This is the small door that gets pushed open when you insert the nozzle at the gas station. Apparently, the small cap/door came off the spring that holds it closed and is now ratteling around inside the chamber behind whare the gas caps threads in. In some cases, if the loose door is positioned just right, in front of the refueling tube, it sends gasoline shooting back at me during refueling. I can usually manage to push the loose door to the side of the chamber with my finger and then carefully insert the nozzle for refueling.

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this before, and if so, what was the repair? I started taking the assembly apart, but it got fairly involved, and I'm not sure I'll have access to that chamber to remove the loose cap.

Also, I'm wondering if I'm doing any damage by not having that little door closed while driving around. Any help is appreciated.
