Jetta TDI Problem... no answers. Can any one help??

I have a 2002 Jetta TDI. What the car does is going along dow the road, it stops allowing revs. I can mash the gas and the engine stays at idle, no matter what. I have to turn the car off then back on to continue on my trip. I have taken it to the dealer twice and the first time found nothing wrong. The second time they checked the computer and said it was the TPS. I call to see how much one is so i can do it myself, and they tell me the diesel in my jetta doesn't have a TPS. The problem is the dealership can't give me a straight answer and i just want to know whats wrong.

Your vehicle ooperates by what's known as "drive by wire" - the accelerator has a potentiometer in the accelerator pedal that measures the position and feeds to the computer, which in turn adjusts the fuel injection (in fewer words, there's no accelerator cable). Sounds like the potentiometer has an intermittent problem and the computer's not getting a signal. That may be what the dealer was referring to by the TPS (TPS could mean throttle position sensor). Check over at

- someone in that group will know what needs to be done (probably replacement of the accelerator pedal).
