Long style Fuel Injector holder 1984 GTI

Hi

Just replaced my fuel injector holders and the orings. On the 1984 and some of the 83s gtis the fuel injector holders are long. A long tube with a round hole in the end for the fuel to come out.

all other A1s from 77 on have the standard short holders, and I think some of the 83s have the short one and some the long ones.

Anyone know the reason for this.

I've replaced the short holders several times on a 1977 and 1980 rabbit. And with new orings the injectors just push in with a bit of force by hand.

I noticed with the long holders that alot of forced is required. I even noticed this before I put the new holders in. I had a holder and injector in my hand and with the oring on I would push and push and the oring would not snap into its grooved area in the holder.

I even took the oring out and just put the injector in the holder and the tip of the injector meets some resistance toward the bottom of the holder. So when I put the holders into the head then pushed the injectors in as far as I could. I noticed that the oring was at the top of the holder and not recessed down in its place in the holder. So I got a screwdriver and hammer and tapped firmly with caution around the nut part of the fuel line where the injector threads to the fuel-line. The injector then seated itself. All four were the same.

Before I removed the holders, when I pulled out the first injector, I tried to reinsert and had the same problem. This is with the old oring and holder. This just shows that there wasn't a problem with the new parts being wrong.

Oh and yes I did use new fiber washers when installing the new holders and note that the holders that were in the car did not have the fiber washers and also the ones in the car were on the loose side, all 4. After the work there is no noticeable difference in how the car runs.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The long holders are supposed to reduce heat soak and in turn flooding. They should help with starting issues.

Did you use the proper Loctite?

Are you soak>Hi

Hi Jim

I soaked the orings in automatic transmission fluid, wipe off the excess, put them on the injectors and then into the holders. 20 years ago a vw mechanic told me to use atf and that is what I've been using over the years.

The resistance that I am encountering to get the injectors into the holders is the tip of the injector making contact with the inner bottom of the holder. If I used the short holders then the only contact surface would be the oring to the holder.

You mentioned loctite last week, I was a bit hesitant to use loctite. I've never used it before. I'll always just tightened them in and never had any problems. Years ago when I replaced a set of holders I noticed teflon tape on the threads of the holders but when I put new ones in I usually don't use anything.

Years ago I had a hard time getting a holder out and it just broke into pieces in the head. I went out and got a huge easyout and jammed it into the holder and took a wrench to the end of the easy-out and I got the holder out.

hmmm Don't the long fuel injector holders/insulators also require the fuel injectors to wear the "hat" on their tips along with those tiny O-rings? So basically there are 2 seals on each fuel injector. Also the FIs for the long holders usually have a C-Clip inbetween the 2 seals close to the larger seal. Not even sure what I used on my '83 GTI engine, but I think I used '87 GTI injectors and I guess the long holders.

Something should go onto the threads of the holders to both seal it and to stop it from loosening up. YES I have seen some loose in the cylinder heads.

on the 84 gti the injectors and orings are the same as all the other A1s. They just changed the holders to longer ones.

I have them in now but just thought I'd ask the group. As it was just for 84 gti and part of 83 I guess it is kind of rare. The 84 rabbit non gti had the short holders. if I were to do it again I would use the short holders.

well i have them in now, with the fiber washers and I tightened them on the snug side, I think I will leave them for now, but keep it in the back of my head to go back and put something on the threads.

So back to your reply. There weren't any hats on the injectors just the single standard oring. After 84 everything changed...

To see pics of all the parts for all the years and models just go to benz bin and lookup the parts, easy to do that is where I got the links to the photos in my earlier post.

Thanks
