MAF Replaced/Questions

Just got my MAF sensor replaced today (00 Jetta GLS VR6 40,000mi)...check engine light came on about 3 weeks ago. Drove right to the dealer (Holberts VW, Doylestown PA) and the guy game me an appt for today! Nice to get speedy service, eh? The service guy said that they have been having a lot of problems with the sensors going bad on other engines, but not the VR6. i mentioned how i was reading a lot about them going bad and he basically just avoided the question entirely and restated what he already said. Is this true?

My main question is this. what EXACTLY does it do, and why do they seem to be goin bad in late model VWs across the bored? anyone have any clue why we are experiencing this? I was fortunate that i have about 4,000 mi left on my warranty...But i dont want to be buyin a new one of these all the time! Let me know your thoughts

-kd PS. Do aftermarket air intake systems tend to burn these sensors out quicker? been thinkin about picking up an AEM or injen....

***True mostly 2.0l

***It measures the amount of air entering the engine in order to calculate how much fuel is needed. Also calcultes load and intake air temperature

and why do they seem to be goin bad in late model VWs across the bored

*** That you have to ask Bosch who makes them
*** I have seen owners add the K&N kit and spray too much oil the filter. This oil ended up the MAF and messed it up! No warranty here. My opinion the only thing the kits do is make noise

Over on the

site a fellow put a bunch of bad ones under a microscope. The current ones are a "thin strip" construction and when it getts dirty, contaminated or whatever they burn themselves up. They work by heating a strip then measure the airflow by monitoring the temperature or current of the passing air cooling it. They are giving "New" jetta/golf/beetle tdi's big time trouble. The older Passats tdi's used a different brand that uses a wire and they don't fail. The part is just too cheaply made. Cost for a 2.0l maf is like $45 but a tdi maf is like $300!! Almost the exact same part too. A big rip off.

My exact same model car with only 35000 miles MAF sensor died about 2 months ago. Out of warranty already so that was $300 + labor. I asked my service rep the same question and he said there were no recalls on MAFS and couldn't explain why they would go bad. He did say our model car MAFS had a fine (very thin) "crosshair" wire that measured air flow, temp, etc for the engine computer and the ones he's seen fail were due to something hitting the wire and breaking it. I've changed my air filter twice already, more than manufacturer recommended, and always make sure the air filter box is clean so can't imagine how anything would get in there to break the wires. Anyway, I got to reading the warranty because I seem to recall someone in this group mentioning it coud be covered under the emmissions part but as far as I could tell it was only covered in California.

Did you get an extended warranty? Just curious as your car is same model year as mine with more miles and you still had warranty coverage.

I bought my car used with 20,000 mi on it, And there used car warrany was 2 years 24,000 miles. so i am covered for another 4000 mi. In a strange way, i hope somethin breaks in those next 4,000 :-p

But why aren't all MAFs identical? I understand they could have different housings and conectors, but they all work the same way (almost) and do the same thing, measure air. So shouldn't all MAFs read out the same electrical values? Why should the be "calibrated" in the factory, shouldn't it just be a software issue in the ECU?

I'd love to buy those new cheap MAFs for the new Golf and use one in my 1994 GTi with the ABA engine, wich also is 2,0.

Why shouldn't it work?

Ah! Thanks. Yes, during the last 10k miles of warranty coverage I had I prayed major items would break down but, as luck would have it, the MAFS decided to wait until about 8k miles beyond warranty coverage to die.

I considered the extended warranty when I bought my car brand new but decided against it. It would have been halfway through paying itself off by now : (
