No Low Beams on 96 Golf? Need Help

I have a friend with a 96 Golf 4 cylinder. The Low beam headlights do not work. The high beams work though. The side markers and tail lights work just no low beams. I replaced both headlight bulbs and it was not that. I assume this may be a bad relay but not sure. There are about 6 relays under the dash next to the fuses but none are marked. I have no idea which realy one may be the low beam one. It is not a bad fuse, I checked that. I have no wiring diagram and need help. Would appreciate any help on what the cause may be and part to replace.

Thanks Mark

No relays.

I'd say check the low beam fuses (I believe there's one for left side and one for right side) and if they're OK then check the switch.

I checked both fuses. They were fine. So I guess it's teh switch. The next question is how the heck does that switch come out? Do you have to tear the dash out or is there a trick to get it out?

I know that my Eurovan has the same switch, but accessing it might be different.

On my Eurovan I stick a thin piece of metal (a butter knife worked for me) above and slightly to the left of the dimmer wheel, pushed the knife up (so the point of the knife inside the dash pointed down), and slid to the right. It took a few tries but it eventually undid the catch that holds the switch in. You will need to pull on the knob while doing this to pull the switch out. On an A3, you might be able to reach another tab on the left side if you pry out the ABS indicator lamp. The two tabs (the one on the left and the one on top) are connected to one another so you only have to reach one of them.
