Passat servicing

I have a 2003 VW Passat and am coming upon the 10K servicing. I was somewhat annoyed that it was ~$65 at the 5000 service for just an oil change. You can get that done anywhere for $20. It appears that the

10K will certainly be more thorough and I anticipate more expensive. My question is whether I can go to an independent mechanic and still be covered under the warrantee. If so, is there any certifications or other paperwork that needs to be done if going outside of VW. Any responses are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Not if you're using the recommended 5W-40 synthetic oil.

At 10K they should also rotate the tires...which they do charge for. If you want to lower the cost a little AND do your engine a favor, buy your own synthetic oil and take it with you to the dealer. Shell Rotella synthetic 5w-40 is ideal and comparatively inexpensive. Our local Wal Mart carries it and I think it's around $12-15/gallon. Be very cautious about taking your car to those local oil change businesses. There is a big plastic shield under the engine that must be removed to change the oil and there are plently of stories of how these local places goof up when they replace it. The shield falls off, you drag and run over it and then get to spend $125 for a new one. In fact, this happened to a friend of mine here at work. So, in my opinion, with new VWs you either get the oil change done at the dealer, do it yourself, or take the car to a reliable foreign car repair business.

I used Shell Rotella 5-40, but it's not on the new list. How is it inadequate such thaqt it's not on the list?

Is this science/engineering or politics/business at play?

Good question. Perhaps we can look at the numbers/codes, etc on the Shell and see if they are similar to the numbers on eg Mobil 1.
