Rust repair on 1986 GTI

My black 86 GTI is starting to show some rust spots. I'm going to be getting some books at the library on auto body repair, and I have fixed and painted a couple of cars in the past.

When it comes to rust repair, just how far do I have to go? Can I just use an angle grinder to take off the bubbled/rusted paint and the surface rust, or do I have to grind away any residual rust? I'm sure there will be some rusted-through holes - repair with fibreglass?

Any better newsgroups for autobody work? Web sites with good practical info on rust repair?

Thanks

rust is evil, evil, evil and must be destroyed. All rust must be either completely removed or covered with a product like POR-15 or Corroless. Any rust through must be addressed thoroughly - all rust removed, holes filled, and both FRONT AND BACK of the rusted through panel painted so it doesn't come back. Most body shops do a shitty job of rust repair, because it's a PITA.

good luck

Best thing is to sandblast the area. Most rust problems start on the inside so after repairing tread the inside with wax oil.
