Saw a Phaeton today.

My dealer has one on the showroom floor. It reminded me some of a

7-series BMW, although it's been a while since I've seen one of those in the flesh, so maybe if they were side-by-side I wouldn't say that.

It's going to take me a while to get used to the idea of a $65,000 VW (especially one with a $1300 gas-guzzler tax).

Something that might be worth mentioning is that this particular car didn't have the 12-cylinder engine, but a 40-valve V8 (not the W8).

Our dealer has 2 of them and I'm doing the PDI tomorrow. V8 is $66k and W12 is $88k!

Lucky You!

My dealer opted out of the Phaeton program....frankly, I think it might be better in the long run....but still, it sucks that I won't have a chance to drive on...

OMG!!! That's more than a Land Cruiser. The LC weighs 6000+ lbs and so you can write off $37K of that if you put the LC in a business name. Same with the fugly H2 and the crapolack engine.

If the Pharton weighs over 3 tons and you have a business than maybe just because it's a VW and new. Other than that. FUGLY!!!!

The interiors are so FRIGGIN TAN!!!!. I HATE TAN!

Of course, you know a columnist has called for a boycott of German cars, don't you? (Eyes rolling...that thread will apparently never die.)

Since the one I saw had a black interior, I'd be willing to bet that the interior color is an option (just like nearly every other car sold in the world today).

I notice that it weighs 5100 pounds. Mercy! I expect that, within a few years, there won't be any small, economical VWs for sale in the States anymore.

I saw a review of the Phaeton on TV and all I could think was how many little accessories that car has that will break within the first few years of ownership.

What for, in place of a spare tire in the Phaeton or Touareg ?

The Phaeton for sure is going to be a serious test to see if VWoA can both woo luxury car buyers to VW showrooms and more importantly *retain* them with proper service. Hopefully VWoA will rise to the occasion.

(Yeah right...we'll see.)

I've heard rumors that VWoA is thinking about bringing the new Brazilian-made Polo sedan (boring) here but hopefully that'll also mean that the hatch (yaaaay!) might also join the party.

Um, I would imagine that it's to address the very sort of concern Mr. Running is expressing.

At $ 65,000 I'd take 5 of these fine cars. On these shores, retail is NOK 2,000,000 = US $ 300,000 (for the W12). More than twice as expensive as a Camaro...
