Thermostat - 1989 Golf

I'm getting very limited heat into the vents - suspect the thermostat. Can anyone tell where it's located? 1989 Golf 1.6

on the bottom of the water pump and if you have power steering the pump will need to be removed first.

If the water temp guage is reading low then I'd agree with you. Best test for a sticky stat is to run the car up to temperature while standing still & then take it for a run down the nearest motorway/freeway. If the temp drops back then your stat is old & weak & needs to be replaced. It might take 5-8 miles for the temp to start dropping. That's what my A4 is currently doing & what my Passat was doing last year.

Also bear in mind that water temp guage senders don't last forever - I've just replaced the one on my 98 Passat and my 96 A4 - over time they seem to get kinda slow & lethargic & don't give necessarily accurate readings.

Other possibilities would be a sticky valve/actuator in the heater circuit, a blocked heater matrix or possibly a weak/failing water pump. Could be the drive belt to the water pump is slipping as well.

If it a MK2 which by date I think it is then if you have had the heater bypass mode which VW did under recall then these valves do go. Replaced the Heater matrix on my MK2 to no effect plus a waste of 6 hours. the by pass valves are engine side where the water pipes go from engine to inside the car. They cost about 40GBP but take 10 15 mins to change easier than the matrix.
