Touareg MP3 options?

We're going to buy a new Touareg this weekend, and I'd like to find out what my options are for MP3 playback.

I own an Apple iPod, so if nothing else, I can use a $10 interface in the cassette deck. Yeah...ick.

Ideally I'd like to have an actual audio interface from the iPod if I was to use that.

But I'd also like to know if some of the new MP3-savvy "head units" available from the big auto hi-fi manufacturers will fit the Touareg. I can then burn CD-R discs with .mp3 files and play them in the car.

Any input would be appreciated!

You can buy the units from the VW dealer and have them install it. If you search the archives of this group, you'll find a post I made reviewing the unit, which I bought for my 2003 Passat.

But note that this won't play MP3 CDs. It has a hard disk that you can remove and bring to your computer to transfer MP3s. It does integrate 100% with the factory VW unit.

I don't know if the unit will work with the Touareg, but your dealer will know.

The PhatBox looks nice, bit I'm leaning toward this:

You can take it in and out of the car, swap hard drive "sleds" *or* use flash instead for better portability, and it can receive *and* broadcast FM - like, say you're having a party, you can take it inside and play the tracks over your FM radio. And it's cheaper than the PhatBox, too.

The Neuros does have the advantage of removability (if there really is such a word!). However, the PhatNoise is fully integrated with the VW sound system, including using the steering wheel controls to navigate.

I think it comes down to how you plan to use the system. If you want a fully integrated system and have little need for removing the system from the car, a fixed system like the PhatNoise is the right choice. But if you want one source of digital music that you can use at home, in the car, or while riding in a train or bus, a removable system like the Neuros, or the iPod with an FM transmitter, is a better choice.

I was thinking of something like this too, but as soon as you broadcast over FM too much fidelity is lost. FM is very low quality and the frequency response of FM tops out at 15KHz.

I guess I'd worry about that if I weren't sitting in a *car* with all its attendant wind/engine/road noise.
