Valve Clearances

I have an 84' Jetta 1.7L. I checked the valve clearances and got the following results:

Cyl. Intake Exhaust

1 .006 .017 2 .006 .013 3 .007 .014 4 .006 .015

They are all out of spec.(according to haynes(intake:.008-.012 exh:.016-.020)) and the clearances are all to small.

The engine was at operating temp. when they were checked.(The rad. fan came on and I tried to work PDQ)

I think it would be better if the clearances were cold spec. as you wouldn't burn your fingers.

Haynes lists these clearances for ALL engines covered by manual. Does Bentley have anything different?

Did you check the results on a cold engine? We always did ours on a cold or warm engine, as from memory it didn't make a difference to worry about. But on the other hand I haven't adjusted valves in years... and I like that.
