VW's are not as reliable as Honda's and Toyota's

or Subaru's or Nissan's or other Japanese cars. This is a fact. VW's are better looking and more fun to drive and more respectable to have in your driveway though. That's why people have VW's. And VW's are not really unreliable either, its just that they don't quite measure up to the Japanese cars due to a few small persistent problems that pop up on a few peoples cars. Its really that simple.

**Look what you started, Woodchuck! ;) I sat in my brother-in-law's STi and was surprised that the interior was so, um, kinda cheap. Nice, for sure, but not as nice as my Jetta. Also, as it was a 2003, it didn't come with a radio. :-/ However, it's *quite* a kick-ass car to drive plus (with snow tires) it's great in snow.

I would be happy if the VW dealers were more responsible. Mine does not even respond to complains. Can't blame him, I am sure they would take up his entire day.

I would say that it depends on how you define reliability. I see a lot more 20, 30 and 40 year old VWs on the road than I do old japanese cars. Certainly the problems that one encounters with a japanese car in its first few years are minimal, but as they get older, they get harder and harder to keep running - VWs seem to be easier to keep running when in their later years. It has been 30 years since they built the old beetle, and there are still a respectable number of them around - name a japanese make/model which is 30 years old which you can still find.

I would have to agree. However, you have to also agree that the newer VWs from A3 and up will be that much more of a PITA to stay on the road due to the extras built in that just are so plastic. Older metal that is lighter A1 A2 are easier to keep going especially the diesel.
