What's the engine cover for?

My 98 Jetta TDI has a plastic engine cover. Can anyone tell me if it serves a useful function other than cosmetic?

3 functions...

1 - cuts down on the noise.

2 - eye candy for the average Joe. 3 - increase sales of the plastic caps that cover the nuts. :)

Some people, like me, think it helps reduce engine noise. Many VW owners have removed their engine covers, but I say, why? There's no downside and maybe it offers some protection.

Everything about a TDI is attractive.

I'm pretty sure its to discourage numnuts from working on their engines and to get them to ask stupid questions in forums like "What's the engine cover for?"
