1985 K5 Build UP

Got my truck stuck in a mud puddle the other day. Right front and left rear tires were spinning. I had to be pulled out, but I got through the second time by choosing a better line.

Where would one start to make a mild trail mobile on a budget? Just wondering what ppl think. I was thinking some better/bigger tires (don't know the exact specs on mine, but there pretty mild) lockers would be nice but there not all that cheap, etc....

I've got an 81 k5 with 2 wheel drive and a real posi. Most, if not all

2wd full sizes blazers came with a posi rear of some type. It hasn't got stuck yet. I've got street tires, and a V6 up front. I've backed out of ditches that had water half way up my grill. I'd suggest you get a locking rear for your truck. Makes a world of difference.

I've never understood how they can sell 4wd without it. No conscience, I guess.

Get the locker. A lock-rite is ~$250 an axle, and a shade tree mechanic can install one at home on a Saturday. My first install took around 6 hours, and now that I have seen how it all works and understand it better I could do a next one in a few hours. I installed a front lock-rite first with the theory that in normal street driving my hubs will separate the tires from the locker and I will not see any ill effects. I have been very happy with off-road performance.

Great tires, working suspension, ample power, and a locker in the rear at LEAST! Oh yea, the vehicle will only get you there, YOU will have to get it back!

Very bottom, pictures of the escapade. The red 1500 pulled me out in about 10 seconds, the only reason I got stuck is because I chose a very, very, bad line.... but it was fun learnin'

You can see how I basically lost my right rear wheel, and all the mud on the truck from the left front wheel spinning. The strap was a very futal attempt to pull myself out....

Hey G - I saw on the k5.html that your buddy got an 'extra' Jimmy for parts when he got his....by chance does this one still have a semi-usable grille? I'm tired of ppl callin my High Sierra a "Chevy" cuz of the spot in my grille for a bowtie.....

TIA...

It did, but it went to the bone yard. We took out the tranny, t-case, the 305, the front seats, the cap, the windshild, the motor&actuator out of the driver's side door, master cylendar, headlights & baskets, plow lights, tail lights, center consol, gauges, whiper mechanism, screw jack, I think thats about it. We couldn't get: manual hubs, steering column, blower motor, plow A-frame.... The rest is now RIP in the previously used dealer lot. (Now is RIP rust in peace or rot in peace?)

In any case, I think you should visit a PUDL for your grill. Either that or stamp chevy into their puny ass little hyundai!
