What is it and how to fix it
This is a 97 explorer sport with 105k 6 cylinder 4.0l engine that runs real strong and has been properly maintained.

One cause for the P0171 (as well as P0174) on the SOHC 4.0L is leaking lower intake manifold o-rings. The problem was common enough for Ford to extend the warranty on them to 6 years, or 72K miles which ever came first. If your
4.0L is the SOHC, then this is one possibility. Expect to pay around $300 to have Ford fix it. There are many more reasons though that can cause this so the only way to know for sure is to run further tests.Have something to add? Share your thoughts — no account required.
