Pinging the Citroënisti

'97 Xantia TD SX, 88k miles. (Mk1)

Front suspension feels underdamped, not the usual "knackered spheres" bouncy, just more wallowy than it should be. Unsettled would be a good description.

All goes up and down as it should, can't find any receipts for spheres, and it's got the non-sink malarky going on.

No clunks, rattles, or undue "pshhhhhhh TIC". Suspension clicks about every

10-20 seconds.

A clue would be nice before I replace the front spheres.

has it had the LHM changed?

if water has got into it it can cause horrible effects..

but if your going to change it, you might as well do the spheres at the same time...

Nah, at that age it'll be after the first facelift (chevrons in the middle of the grille), and have gained the anti-sink and 6+2 pump.

Wonder if some pillock's put accumulator spheres on the front...? How do the spheres look? Clean and green as if they've been replaced? Any markings on them near the plug?

I stand corrected, that's the jobbie, yeah.

Everything under the bonnet is clean, it's bleedin' spotless under there.

The only thing I remember about the spheres is they have the Citroen logo on. I'll have a look at the markings tomorrow if that'll help. What am I looking for?

Shove us the references on them. They should be barely visible, almost dot- matrix printed.

Right, the numbers on the front spheres are; 96178589 1-344 DL. Same number on both spheres.

Weirdly enough, the ride quality gets much better after 5 minutes. Initially I thought it was just that I was getting used to it, so I sent my mate round the block, alone, in the car and I went round the block in it when he returned. Bloody weird.

The brakes are strange on it as well, you can keep the same pressure on the pedal and occasionally it 'grabs' slightly.

Could this be the 3rd front sphere causing madness?

Ride quality in the back is as good as normal..

From a Cit parts man mate...

"Checked with Citroen; that reference number is not recognised by them. However, it's almost the same as that on a Xantia accumulator sphere (96178588, although that's not the part number). Might be worth re-checking the reference number given."

Also spoke to a CitSpecialist mate, and his immediate answer was "Swap the spheres"

Unlikely, on an SX, since that doesn't HAVE a Hippo sphere.

Nice one, looks like it's time to swap the front spheres then.

I'll check the numbers again, but I'm certain they're 8589.

This is the only thing that lets the car down, I'm astonished how clean the thing is, it's almost worryingly mint otherwise.
