Our politicians at work..

So, they decline to reduce the tax burden on litre of gas (something like 47%)even though they're running a government surplus, then turn around and try to give MPs in Canada an increase in their mileage allowances because of the price of fuel. Currently, civilians can get up to $0.42/km allowance, MPs $0.50/km. Typical.

Sheep elected them. In Ontario, they made something like 100 promises and broke them all. But as long as you tell liberal Canadians that you give them stuff you'll never give them, they'll elect you. Politicians that have said what needed to be said never have a prayer. Kind of like America.

What is so strange about that? That's been the way of politics since the beginning. Promise them anything to get them to follow you, until it's too late for them to turn back.

If you had a job where you controlled your own pay and benefits, as our senators and congressmen do, I'd bet the vast majority of people would do the same.

I don't think it's so much the people are sheep, as it is the politicians are great salespeople with circus or carnival barker backgrounds.

When you word th>Sheep elected them. In Ontario, they made something like 100 promises >and broke

Exactly. Now take our good ol' boy Jebbie, the guv'ner of the Sunshine State. Years ago, he vowed that he'd always stave off drilling for oil in the Gulf off the coast of Florida. But wait! Now he's just decided to do an about face and claim that his previous position was just simply ridiculous. I wonder when he last talked to his big bro?

Probably recently, however, that, IMHO, does not mean he didn't see the financial writing on the wall that Texas, Louisiana, and California saw decades ago. Not everything is part of a Geo W Bush conspiracy. Spike

You speak of a "gas allowance for civilians".... WTF is this "gas allowance"???? Might be some employer thing for travelling employees but it has little to do with mainstream life.... some of us work for a living instead of going from meeting to meeting.

I'm not sure where you're from.... yes, the electoral boundaries are heavily loaded towards liberals.... You wanna see how real life can be???? Come to northern Alberta.... deal with mother nature... find your mental and physical limits.... do something with your life instead of bitching.

Most of all - vote... every chance you get.... vote..... probably wont change much but at least we can bitch with authority. Politicians are all the same.... They start by stealing pens and work their way up....

Sounds like the states during WW2's rationing of all commodities necessary to support the war effort. Is Canada about to invade the USofA? : 0 )

I would not be surprised at some point to see the rationing type of system we faced in the mid 70s return here in the USA. But Congress just, if I heard the news correctly, approved fast track for new refineries. That might be of some help in about 10-20 years.

Here, I must disagree. They are not all the same. There are some short ones and some tall ones, some thin one and fat ones, men and women... LOL

It should only take them 3-4 years to build and start-up a refinery that cost in the billions range.

The operative word here is "should". Every time a new refinery has even been thought of in the past three decades the environmentalists come screaming out of the woodwork to put a screeching halt to it.

The real big problem with refineries is that they take forever & two decades to get through all the red tape planning processes, then they have to deal with all of the negative press, eviron-whackos, and the constant re-design process.

Then on top of all of that the ROI on a refinery is one of the absolute lowest one can get on a major capital investment. It takes for ever an ever to capitalize the damn thing. Although at five bucks a gallon it might not just be all that long.

Many people receive gas allowances for travelling for work. That's what I meant.

Why would I want to live in the sticks?

I've voted against the reigning government ever chance I've gotten. Unfortunately, the nanny state is strong and they have the dimwits convinced 40%+ tax rates are good for them, even while the political corruption is shown at every turn. Canadians are SHEEP.

Well, Jebbie's last name is 'Bush', and he's basically told everyone to screw off because he's just going to do what he wants. Now where have I heard that before?

So far he's batting 1000 - an about face on his promise to never allow Gulf drilling, and repeated attempts to dump amendments that already passed - smaller class sizes in school and legalized slots. The guy has absolutely no respect for the citizens of the state.

Actually you placed the "screw off" words in his mouth and I have to call you on that. Lets stick to facts and let others form their own opinions if he meant that. Now with rising oil prices, China in the WTO now needing so much more oil we are competing with them trying to buy oil from Russia, Canada, and other nations. Aside of the fact that other OPEC countries are taking advantage of our "capitolistic" ways. We need to use our own resources and I am sure Jeb is wise enough to see that. When the world changes around you, you need to change with it. That also includes changing your decisions under different circumstances.

OK, so I paraphrased. But the intent is the same.

What do you mean 'if'? Of course he meant that. He and all his buds have already admitted that the voting public doesn't know what they're doing; he's already said that he will try to "talk some sense" into the voters by not allowing the mandates to take effect. This includes smaller class sizes and slots for parimutuals in Broward. The drilling is just the latest thing where he's flip-flopped because of political pressure.

WTF do you know about how "wise" Jebbie is? Have you personally lived under his gubernatorial rule?

You might want to mention that to Jebbie's big brother.

The picture you paint of Florida is that it's all part of some global Bush conspiracy for the family to take over the world or something.

Politicians change their positions all the time. Not just in Florida, but in most all the states. They generally do what is best for themselves, which sometimes even is best for the state.

There are many things get rammed down the throats of the people, like smaller class sizes, and such. Sometimes they are good ideas. And sometimes those wonderful ideas are rushed through without the funding to pay for them. In some cases, they get pushed through and years later it's realized just what a terrible mistake was made when it passed.

Something has to happen to pay for all the wonderful programs people envision. So, you either opt for casinos and oil rigs, or you opt for higher taxes.
