I've got a problem with a 16v 214. After running normally for five minutes or so the temperature soars and the coolant overflows. One theory is that the cylinder head gasket has blown, and another is that the water pump isn't pumping the water.

Its the delay before the pressure expels the water which is puzzling me. I have a theory that a leaky head gasket would have an immediate effect but symptoms of a faulty water pump would be delayed and appear only after the water temperature had risen. Does this sound logical?

It sounds like head gasket to me.

The water won't start blowing out until it has heated up. That may well take

5 minutes or so - nothing to do with the pump.

HGF. I'd bet my mortgage on it.

Face it, it's the head gasket. Check it hasn't cracked, that's what happened on mine and I was only running the thing in winter while I scraped the windows! Jumped in and the temperature gauge had jammed itself at the top of the scale. Cracked head at one of the exhaust valves. Check if ALL the pipes are getting warm, I'll bet they're not.
