92 Loyale "Check engine" possibilities

I'm considering buying a '92 Loyale in mostly good shape, but the Check Engine light is always on. Seller says a mechanic checked the fault code and it was "something that could be ignored, something about emissions" but didn't remember any details. Assuming this is all true, (seller is a divinity student, unless he's a compulsive liar) what emission-related problems would cause the light to go on and just how trivial could they be?

The car is an hour's drive from me so taking it to a mechanic is a bit of a pain at this point.

From his description, it could likely be the EGR control solenoid. My 91 Loyale has a fried control solenoid, and it actually runs a little better without it. I'm going to get it replaced anyhow because it blinds me to any other problem the check engine light would tell me about. . before I bought the car, I'd insist on a code reading, but if it's just the EGR solenoid when you test it, I'd say go ahead and buy the car. According to my mechanic a replacement solenoid can be obtained from Subaru for $83 (and there's unfortunately no aftermarket equivalent.)

But like I said - definately insist on a code reading first. He could be lying about it, or not remember the real reason.

It's most likely a EGR solenoid or a CPC (canister purge control) solenoid. Quite common to replace. Fairly easy as well.
