1. If you have money to invest should you put it into a new internal combustion engine or into a better battery for electric cars (and other things)?

What are you going to do when you can no longer buy gasoline because all of the cars and trucks have gone electric?

1. My 10-year old Subaru has a CVT and I have not had any problems with it.

I would not hold my breath waiting for electric cars to take over.

Have not seen problems with Subaru CVT's. I hear Nissan uses bad ones.

Subaru uses the same ones, same subcontractor makes both manufacturer's CVT's. But they may be improving over the past decade. I like Toyota's design for CVT better, their transmission use a single manual-style 1st gear for starting off, and then use the CVT for 2nd on down to infinity. Puts less torque on the CVT during starting, letting the 1st gear take all of that load, and the CVT is mainly just used for highway and fast city driving.

I think they do use the Jatco CVT transmission as does Nissan but they are designed for Subaru boxer. I know there were problems in the past but assume improvements must have been made. I know that they extended the warranty on older cars but have not heard that there are problems on the later ones.

I had a 2016 Forester with a CVT. No problems but I had low mileage when I totaled it in 2019. Now have a 2019 Crosstrek with CVT.

Well, yeah, hard to say if the same transmission is going act the same way in two different manufacturer's cars, the electronics are programmed by their manufacturer's own engineers after all. In the old days, it was all mechanical governing reliability and performance, but these days software plays a large underappreciated part too. Tesla's entire ecosystem seems to be software-controlled.
