To all:
I lifted the problem described below from a Chevy Suburban forum ( SubForum ), where none of the participants (including me) have so far been able to come up with a good answer. The suggestions offered so far have been: (1) possible counterfeit belts, (2) (from me) too much load from accessories, including from alternator try to recharge battery (he replied that it's
4 years old) possibly discharged by slippage due to stretched belt.Maybe someone here can...

From the suburban site:
High=mileage 7.4L engine...new genuine GM serpentine belt 2 weeks ago...one week later, tensioner up against stops... another new belt, one week later, same thing. Tensioner was replaced about 50,000 miles ago. Smog pump and crank pulley both replaced recently. All accessory brackets and braces are in place and tight. Belt runs true on pulleys. When new belt is installed, tensioner marks are correct--one week later, maxed out. No visible signs of failure. I'm stumped, my mechanic (at GM dealer) is stumped. Any ideas?
