  1. P0217 — Engine cooling (stop driving). The engine computer has recorded an over-temperature condition. The engine has been hotter than it is designed to run.

Checks to do first, in order

  1. Stop as soon as it is safe to do so and let the engine cool before opening anything — a hot cooling system is under pressure and will scald.
  2. Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
  3. Have the vehicle recovered rather than driven if the temperature gauge is high or coolant is visibly leaking.
  4. Have the cooling system, water pump, thermostat and head gasket inspected before the engine is used again.
