What this means

  1. P0488 — Emissions control (service soon). The exhaust gas recirculation throttle actuator is not moving to the position the engine computer commanded. This is about the actuator and its circuit, not the EGR valve.

Checks to do first, in order

  1. Do not replace the EGR valve on the strength of this code — it is rarely the fault, and it is the most common wasted repair here.
  2. Inspect the EGR passages and any differential pressure sensor passages for carbon build-up.
  3. Check the throttle actuator connector, wiring and any vacuum lines.
  4. Verify the actuator moves freely through its range before replacing it.
