  1. P2181 — Engine cooling (service now). The cooling system is not performing as expected. The engine computer has seen temperatures that do not match what it commanded.

Checks to do first, in order

  1. Check the coolant level and watch the temperature gauge before driving further — overheating is the failure mode this code exists to catch.
  2. Have the thermostat tested; stuck open and stuck closed both set this code and only one of them is dangerous.
  3. Check the radiator fan operation and the coolant temperature sensor against a known-good reading.
