transmission fluid changeout frequency

Hi all,

My Haynes manual says the '96 camry only holds 2.8 quarts of ATF. (Of course, my Haynes could be wrong.)

Is this ATF volume similar on the '01 camry? (I don't have a Haynes for the '01.)

What volume of ATF will come out when draining the plug?

I'm planning on changing my dad's ATF, and I'm trying to figure out how many "changeouts" will be needed to thoroughly clean out his tranny fluid.

I'm guessing 1/3 (or 0.67) of the fluid will come out when draining by the plug. Let me know if this is wrong.

So, if we drain it once, 0.67 (67%) of the old fluid will remain.

Drain it twice (like, during the next scheduled oil change), we get

0.67 x 0.67 = 0.49 (49%) of the old fluid remaining.

Drain it three times, 0.67x 0.67 x 0.67 = 0.30 (30%) of old fluid remaining.

Drain it N times, (0.67 ^ N) x 100 gives the percentage of old fluid remaining.

Of course, I'm assuming the 0.67 number is correct, is it closer to

0.75 or closer to 0.4?

At this rate, it seems that changing ATF along with regular engine oil changeouts (every 5,000 miles) seems to be the best way to "flush" out the old fluid. And since he has only 30,000 miles on the car, this is not as critical as it would be if he'd neglected the tranny oil after

90,000 miles, no?

and assuming the tranny volumes are the same for the 2001 model:

changeout % of old fluid remaining

1 71.2 2 50.7 3 36.1 4 25.7 5 18.3 6 13.0 7 9.3 8 6.6 9 4.7

Jesus Christ. You're really taking this trans fluid change stuff head on, huh? You didn't list the engine, but I'm assuming a six, right? Anyway, rule of thumb we use in the shop for sixes is three quarts. And, your methodology, though tangled, is about right I guess.

I am interested in this topic also. What did you do for trans fluid change in the shop? Do you just drain and replace or you actually remove the pan and clean the strainer?

Thanks

Oh, sorry, forgot to mention they're both four-cylinder.

I think every 7500 miles is sufficient, but every 5000 miles will keep the ATF in better shape. With a strainer/gasket change every 15000 miles. Use the Fram kit with a cork/rubber gasket. About $12 online.

Where did you get the idea Fram parts are superior to Toyota?
