I don't need the car, but it sounds like it coul be a great donor car for an engine swap or upgrade. Assuming the lump didn't take the brunt of the wack, your sister's son should consider marketing it that way.

Has anyone ever seen a 3.0L in an E30? I'll bet an older E36 M3 engine has been transplanted before...

Isn't the E30 engine at an angle to reduce bonnet height? Would a twin cam clear this?

Yes, there have a few E36 M3 engines put into E30s. Zionsville Autosport do an excellent CD showing you all the steps.

Almost all 4 and 6 cylinder BMW engines are at about a 20-30 degree angle, have been since time began (the late 60's) :-)

That's what I guessed. And a twin cam is wider, so will be higher when canted over, like for like?

BMW South Africa, made a limited number of E30s with the 3.3l motor from the

733i during the 80ies. They did have to modify the engine bay a bit to make the engine fit though... As far as I know, this was unfortunately only done in South Aftrica.

Not quite :-)

They actually got the bits from Alpina in Germany! Alpina made an E30 //M3 with an M30 engine, called the B6 3.5 I believe.

Biggest external difference was changing the intake manifold of the M30 to mount the airbox on the other side of the engine. This was done by basically making a hole in the big flat vertical section of the manifold where the letters "3.0 / 3.5" are normaly moulded on.

There was a guy in the UK with an imported 1987 333i, only his had a twin turbo setup made by a Glasgow company - 550bhp!!
