Flushing out engine????

Jan 23, 2004 2 Replies

What would be the best way to get the antifreeze / oil residule out of the engine. It is a vortec 4.3. I have the heads off and would like to clean what I can see. Would it be OK to use kerosine to clean the top and let it run out oil plug.

Should I use a flush when I get it running??

Thanks

Do NOT use kerosene or any other solvent for this purpose. I would: Let it drain from the drain plug for 24 hrs or more. When ready to start add normal inexpensive oil and proper filter. Start and run at idle for 30 seconds. Replace the oil and filter and run again for a few min. I would then go for a third oil and filter change. Then I'd visually inspect the oil on the dipstic and probably another oil change a few hundred miles later.

May sound a little excessive, but that's what I would do. B
