HUH??? When the copper is gone...the bearing is WAY past its life expectancy. I was taught that the babbit is the material in "contact" (lubricated contact) with the rotating whatever. Copper is the core material, and steel is the outside of the bearing. If that is not the case, there is a technical school in NY that has been teaching that for years and years.

It is the case. And what happens when a bearing "spins" is it gets hot from lack of lubrication and sticks to the crankshaft.

Your right, I was thinking backwards I guess. It looks like puter, then you may see some copper.
