Rebuilding Muncie 465 Transmission

OK So here's the sad tale.

I just quit my job, and I was driving home from the dump the morning after I quit my job, when the transmission in my '87 Chevy R20 lost 3 and 4th gear. Nothing like driving the city streets of Richmond, VA in a truck that won't go over 25 miles per hour (Come to think of it, I wasn't the only one going that slow...hmmm....)

The xmission is a Muncie 465. Now, normally, I would drop the transmission myself, and then take it to a shop to have it rebuilt but, now that I have

A) Time

and

B) No money

I was wondering how difficult it would be to rebuild this thing by myself. I have rebuilt a rear end before, and that wasn't too bad. I own a 40 ton press, and just about every tool you can name, and in looking at the rebuild instruction in the haynes manual, nothing looks too bad.

Any advice? I am guessing that one of the shift selector pawls is broken, but as long as I have to take the darned thing out I might as well go for the full deal.

looks

If you can make enough access thru cab you may be able to fix it just by pull top off while still in truck without removeing tranny.

well...

WIthout sawzalling a major portion of the floor pan - I don't think that you get the top off...

On my full sized 63 Chevy PU there was a removable cover over the transmission. I removed and reinstalled by hand the clutch and transmission thru the opening.

Yes I thought abut that afterwards but I remember when floor pans over trannies did unbolt on GM trucks. What year truck is this? If it came with a 465 it is likely at least 18 years old

The truck is a 1987. I checked again - unless the bolts are WAAY up under the carpet, you'd have to sawzall the floor pan.

I got everything but the actual transmission off today - boy was it HOT! Just have the bell housing bolts to take off and I am done.

Now comes the fun part...
