Lancia Flavia thoughts?

The last thing I need right now is another classic, but an ad on our works intranet has tickled my curiosity enough for me to take a look, if only because of the words "free to collector" (though this appears to be the subject of dispute between the owner and his wife!). All I know is that it's a 1970's Lancia Flavia which has been sitting in a garage for a number of years. I've yet to see whether it's a nice looking sporty coupe or an ugly square box.

So anyone know anything about them? Just a heap of rusty Italian tin or a source of valuable bits that will set eBay aflame?

That shows the problem, it could be an ugly four-door saloon:

a gorgeous two-door coupe:

Soon see...

Oh, and that yellow one's a Fulvia not a Flavia unless the name was changed in different countries.

Gorgeous things, and very nice mechanically.

Dire rotboxes, so run away from one that needs panels. I think that mechanical availability is pretty good, although you're dealing with specialists. If it really has lived in a garage, then it might be a real sleeper.

There are three bodyshells - the Zagato, which is like hen's teeth, the old one (separate lights) and the later one ('70s style linear strip grille and lighting). I can't think of any that qualify as ugly square boxes.

To be honest, I'm only really thinking in terms of getting something for nothing and having a little fun stripping it and flogging the parts, or getting the engine running and then selling the whole car as quickly as possible, as I really can't take one another project at the moment.

It's all the eye of the beholder of course, but I wouldn't describe this as exactly beautiful:

Anyway, enough speculation, I'll say more once I've actually seen it!

No, that's the plug-ugly one, but I didn't think that was the same car. Am I getting confused with the Flaminia ?

What's the engine ? Boxer 4 ?

Even if it's the ugly one, it will be very rewarding to own and drive. Go for it.

Oh, please, don't just break it for spares. From your pic it looks well worth putting back on the road. Otherwise it's another bit of automotive history - and a lovely driver - which will be gone forever.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Geoff Mackenzie" saying something like:

Ermm... that's a pic of an example, not the one he's going to see.

OK, I haven't seen it yet. The owner's busy so I'll have to wait another week. I've found out a bit more though. It's circa 1970 Pininfarina

2litre Coupe, not an HF (i.e. not fuel injection). Been off the road for 18 years (!), but started a few months back and ran smoothly after an initial cloud of smoke. Owner mentioned rusty wheel arches and door bottoms so it's not immaculate, but then it was never going to be! It may be more than I can handle, but I'll keep you all informed either way.

changed in different countries.

Yes, you are right.... it's a wonderful Fulvia, perhaps the third series (Fulvia III). I think that the name has been maintained all over the world. Just a little question... Can you tell me if Fulvias are appreciated in UK classic cars market?

Willy Eckerslyke gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

and that saloon's not ugly. Gorgeous, it is.

I like it too!

Glad I'm not the only one :-)
