Diesel is by no means as green as The Greens would have us believe.

In an article in The Independent (15/12/00) it was claimed that the amount of CO2 produced per "Average petrol car per passenger-km" was

0.19 kg while that for the for diesels was 0.18 kg. A litre of Diesel produces 2.68 kg of CO2 while a litre of petrol only 2.31 kg. Diesel is also well known for producing particulates which are a serious risk to health.

Quite. Production of CO2 per per passenger-km is about 5% less with diesel. This is the practical statistic which matters, not the following:

Which may be true in theory, but in practice the greater efficiency of the diesel engine renders this meaningless as a yardstick for measuring pollution.

Which is why some manufacturers fit particulate filters.

You also need to take into account what happens to the stuff that gets removed from crude oil to produce both petrol and diesel...
