'99XLT Wipers Quit

May 23, 2005 1 Replies

This isn't about the rear wiper -- I learned to ignore that a long time ago .

My front wipers will sometimes not start. I searched through old posts, and it seemed that most were concerned with uncommanded starts.

I've checked fuses - obviously not the problem because they will run sometimes - but checked them anyway. I've also run (some) voltage checks, and it seems like nothing is really wrong, except the durn things just sometimes don't work. Everything else controlled by the multifunction unit seems to work. Where is the GEM located?

Thanks Mark

Yes, the 99s had a bad multifunction switch that intermittently cycled the wipers. They were recalled.

The replacements are not much better. Mine failed with a little cloud of smoke that wafted up from the steering column.

I think it is much more likely you have an intermittent problem with your switch than a GEM problem . New switch was about 55.00 if I recall correctly.

Your GEM is behind the radio. The whole bezel and radio come out when you remove two screws above the heater a/c controls.

Good luck!

BTW, if it is your GEM, you can find em a lot cheaper at the junkyard.
