Good all around tires for the Explorer XLT (235/70/16)

Hi-

I'm hitting about 43K miles and my tires are done for (lots of ski trips). I am looking to buy new ones (probably online) and am looking for experiences with good all-season tires for this vehicle. (Not necessarily an XLT or an '02, of course).

Anyone with good experiences on the tires they use would be much appreciated.

I am not going to buy new rims so they've gotta be 16's

Thanks!

Cheers,

I've had Michelin LTX/MS on a '98 and they were quiet, long wearing (tread wear around 440 I think). Our '02 has Goodyears 16" factory's on it. They are quiet and a softer coumpond rubber, (tread wear I think is about 330). The softer goodyears would probably be better in snow, but the michelins would wear longer. wth

The LTX/ATs are excellent as well, though probably nosier than the MS. Can't stop the ATs in snow!

My experience with Michelin Cross-Terrains and LTX M/S is that the Cross Terrains are better tires in every way (wet grip/dry grip/quietness/traction in snow/treadwear). They do cost about $10 more per tire though. They can be special ordered at Costco if you can't get a decent price through a tire store.

Michelin's are way overpriced and overrated!!! The Toyo AT Open Country is by far a more traction superior, better quality made tire for less money!!! The Toyo's offer a spiral wound nylon belt for added high speed protection, and a rim guard protector as well. Michelin tires do not have either one!!! Toyo's are kick ass tires!!! Another good tire to consider is the Yokohama Avid S/T.

All round tires are preferred over those that aren't ;-)

I got the Miches almost free as part of the Firestone debacle. Love them. Driving off the lot was an astonishing difference from the Firestones I drove in on. I'll get 'em again when these wear out. My experience with Miches in the past has been they darn near never wear out, though.
