1999/2000 XJR Reliability

Looking to buy a 1999 or 2000 XJR or XJ8.

I know quality has improved in recent years, but....

*What types of problems do these newer cars typically have? *How often are they in for service? *Anyone know how much a typical year's service cost might be? *How many miles can you get out of a XJ6, XJ8, XJR? (realistically)

What I want is four door muscle car. Rear wheel drive, V8, 5 or 6 speed auto...but I dont want to spend more than $25K ish.....(seen XJRs on ebay in the mid to high 20s range).......

I realize the performance and stylistic merits of these cars, but am concerend about reliability......Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

My dad has a 99 XJR. Its just shy of 40k miles, if I remember correctly. The only problem I can think of was him bending a rim and there being a rattling speaker. Its a great car. In my opinion, probably the most beautifully designed car in recent memory.

Well, some points:

1.. A 1999-2000 model jaguar is more reliable than either the BMW 5 or 7 series and the large Mercs. Period. 2.. Jaguar never produce anything other than enjoyable cars to drive. You wear a jaguar like good sports clothes. 3.. The XJR will generally piss on anything else that was produced as a production sports car at the time of its manufacture. 4.. It is still the most beautiful four doo saloon ever produced. And is instantly recogniseable as a jaguar and only a jaguar. Try saying that about a BMW or modern merc. 5.. They generally only need the service according to the schedule, but you should be prepared for the 60,000 mile and 120,000 mile large service. In those two services everything is done including bearing repack on all wheels, diff oil, transmission service, air con service, all engine fluids and filters, engine tune etc. The car is thoroughly gone over. Use a Jaguar specialist, and not a jaguar dealer service - some of the dealer service areas are not good and most jag specialists are cheaper and are more genuine and customer oriented. There are plenty of them in most countries. 6.. Once you own a jaguar you will never buy anything else if you are serious about cars. 7.. beware of the XJR - it reaches stratospheric speeds very quickly - and you will not genrally know about it until the local law enforcement pulls you over for low flying. 8.. All jaguars with the sports suspension and low profile wide rubber will tramline - it is a matter of experimentation with tyre brands and air settings (assuming the shocks are in good nick and the bushes are all okay) to ensure good tracking - the sterring is very light and sensitive. You can get the boost re-adjusted to a different setting for you. 9.. enjoy cheers

I have 1998 XJR8, bought from a Franchised Dealer with FSH also Jaguar Warranty. To me this is a must, my engine blew up last November, the cost was £7800! covered by the warranty thank goodness. To renew the warrant is £800 per annum - well worth it is very comprehensive. Service Interval is

10,000 miles, and varies from about £275 to £700 for minor to major services. The engine blow-up I am informed was very rare - Jaguar sent 2 engineers to inspect the car - apparently a circlip on No 1 main bearing broke allowing the liner to move and shatter, filling the engine with bits of metal - a complete replacement was the only choice.

Wonderful car - very fast - agree with previous note it will blast over the

70 limit just by sneezing, so be careful and get a GPS Camera.Speed detector, then you can really piss those boy racers off etc.

Cheers

I just bought a 2000 XJR (second hand). Fabulous car! Don't know enough about BMWs to make a comparison.

I did a bit of reading on internet etc. Nikasil lined engines might be a problem (with some BMWs too) but only up to 1999 MY cars. I think I read somewhere if the last 6 digits on VIN number start with F then it's ok. And most significant factor seemed to be using fuel with high sulphur content.

I've got an extended warranty to 5 years/250,000 km with mine but that may be because I bought it from dealer.

Have read that circlip story somewhere else too. Hope it's not a common thing!

JD Power surveys have jaguar XJ series in top 5 for initial customer satisfaction (top 4 are something like skoda, subaru, toyota). I believe the V8 motor is much more reliable than previous motors and XJ in general is much improved since Ford took over in 1995.
