No you will not damage the engine if you putter around and never load the engine. Loading the engine is brisk accelerating, carry loads, climbing hills, fast driving and sustained high engine speed. If you do any of the above, you risk damage. I should also mention that emmisions and cat life can be affected if you allow the computer to sense the "Pinking" and retard the ignition; this was designed as a safeguard, not one to be used because its there.

In Europe where fast driving is permitted and have fuel standards that eclipse those of US standards, car makers can add more ignition advance for better performance and economy. However for the US market, Euro car makers retard the ignition knowing that the Average American is going to fill up on rot-gut fuel or run on "Regular". This is why Americans can get away with it in some cases.

Fuel is not fuel. If you like you car you purchase from new stations, and avoid the the fuel mixed with ethanol or whatever. I like Chevron, they dont add alternate fuel fillers that actually reduce your MPG, making you a better customer in the long run.
