88 YJ Idle

Oct 26, 2008 8 Replies

Recent carb rebuild. When coming to a stop idle will drop to 200 or stall completely. Checked idle tubes and hole dia is .032 and the tube are not blocked. Only happens during stops and the more rapid the stop it will stall. Inclination has no bearing as this is happening during city driving on flat streets. Normal hot idle is about 650-700.

Idle drops when stopping. Recent rebuild on the carb. Idle drops down to 200-300 and sometimes stalls all together when stopping. I have ensured the idle tubes are clean and the hole size is .032" and the idle still drops when stoppping. Need to give the gas pedal a shot before motor will restart. Normal idle runs about 650-700. Happening during level city driving. Any thoughts?

First thing I'd check is the low idle screw. Initial though is the plate is closing too much.

Does your power brake booster get it's vacuum from the carb? If so, you have a gasket leak inside the carb, so when you apply the brake, it's messing up the vacuum in the carb, causing the engine to die. At any rate, you got something wrong in the carb.

I would be suspecting the EGR valve has gotten sticky with carbon so it isn't closing fast enough. They can be removed and cleaned with a soak in carb cleaner.

To test this out, just remove the vacuum line from the EGR and plug the line, then drive to see what happens.

I had the same sort of problem with mine. I swapped out that Carter carb with a MotorCraft 2100, and my problems have gone away. It no longer stalls on steep inclines as well.

Jeep America #1, way to show off your true colors there buddy. Can you even pick out Canada on a map? (It's Canadian too btw..)

And I have yet to see a "pujots" driving here, maybe you ment Peugeot? (Although I haven't seen one of those here either...)

Anyway, after reading 2 posts on this group, and seeing your responses, I shall unsubscribe, this is obviously not a place to get any sort of help.

No need to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Just block objectionable individuals' posts, not the whole group.
