Re: do aftermarket exhausts increase gas mileage?

it depends on a couple things....but it's possible for an aftermarket system to improve all three. factors such as "how well the aftermarket system is designed" "how well the original factory system was designed" etc have a big role. also, if the intake side is already at max capacity, improvements on the exhaust side aren't going to show any noticeable difference....

The previous posts are true. However, if it sounds cool when you jump on it, you will. And that eats MORE gas.. ;-)

Don't spend $500 on an exhaust system that will only save you $100 a year in gas.

True.

It's much easier to justify a new exhaust after bending the old one on a rock. :)

That and stainless is over-rated. Aluminized steel works just fine for the rocks and stuff it's exposed to.

If you're running more air through, have to add more fuel to go with it. More power doesn't necessarily mean greater efficiency.

They can do all of these things. Some will not do very much, and some others will do wonders. What you need to look at is the entire system from block to bumper. The older your vehicle is, the greater the positive impact will be. My old CJ5 gained greatly from a new header, but gained less so from the cat-back system that I had installed a few months earlier. (I had issues with the cat-back, then subsequently installed a header and retained the cat-back system, so I got to experience the improvement in stages.)

Your motor is a pump that pumps air, the more air that can get out, then the more air that can go in. If you open up the exhaust, then you can get more air in. More in creates more power at the pavement. More power means greater efficiency, which means less gas.

Why not? In 5 years it will have paid for itself. That is a pretty good pay off for most people.

I have an 9 year old stainless exhaust on my VW which only cost me $350 9 years ago and that has paid for itself due to no replacement costs.

I want to do the same with my YJ. I am thinking of the Banks stinger system for only $289 and it's a stainless cat-back.

Or he could just drive farther and pay it off in one year.
