MOT Test - Fail on Drivers seat security

From the MOT manual

  1. The security of the drivers or front passenger's seat is significantly reduced. Very slight play when drivers seat is levered up when fully slid back. Nothing that I can judge when in working position.Seems to be wear on seat slider section and not play on the fixed mounting.

What criteria is applied in judging the security of the seat. Seems a bit harsh to me, and not something I have come across before.

Any thoughts?

what you quoted is the criteria " 2. The security of the drivers or front passenger's seat is significantly reduced." which could mean broken mounting bolts or broken frame if the seat belt stalks are mounted to it as well the it comes under seat belt criteria, but without seeing it personally its fairly hard to determine how bad it is.

Not too clear what you are saying: "Very slight play when drivers seat is levered up when fully slid back....Seems to be wear on seat slider section and not play on the fixed mounting." So, there is play even when the seat is far back, and the belt is showing damage?

Reasons for Rejection(5b): "...to remove ALL the slack from the belt..."(2b), and (2c): "fluffing or fraying... ", "stitching badly frayed..." You may also like to post your question to the MOT Forum:

No broken mounting bolts, no broken frame - seat belts are judged ok. I am taking the vehicle in for repair tomorrow and this is one point of the test that seems a bit harsh. thanks for your input

No damage to belt, seat seems secure to me. The amount of play is really negligible and only when I grasp the seat and give it a good upward push - I would say 2mm at most. Thanks for your input John

Does seem a OTT. Seat runners almost invariably have play. They're not exactly precision mechanisms. Those that don't have play, are probably gummed up with dust and fibre particles. Mike.
