Volvo D5 06 Soot filter

Hi, i keep getting 'soot filter full' message and car goes into limp mode when i open it up on the bypass.

I'm guessing it needs a period at speed to burn the crap off, but how do i do that if it goes into limp mode?

Your best course of action will be to have the DPF off the car and power wash it out. Bear in mind the ash is highly carcenogenic so do not inhale the dust and do it in an open space.

See how you go with that, but you may have to have the ash level reset to zero for the ecu to be happy.

Whats the miles on the car?

How old is the car? Still under warranty? Have you been following the instructions on how to manage your DPF? The manual would be a good place to start.

I'm guessing by the subject, it's a 2006?

VAG won't accept warranty claims for DPF faults if they have been caused by not following the handbook rules; I'm guessing others are the same.

Again for VAG, once the vehicle has entered 'limp-home', it's not possible to regenerate the DPF by driving. They have to be connected to diagnostic equipment that carries out a sequence of holding the revs high, then checking. It takes around half an hour to complete.

If this fails, the DPF has to be replaced.

Doh! Good point. ;-). Didn't realise that DPFs had been around for so long.

Sure you're not mixing up DPFs and oxidation catalysts (to remove CO)? The latter have been around for much longer.

Nope.

Have you got any other faults? A guy at work has been having problems where he gets a similar message and the garage have failed to sort it out ... principly because they have ignored what he has told them about a failed temperature sensor - the ECU thinks that it has never got up to temperature, so it never burns off the soot and keeps going back to limp-home mode.
