1988 260E warms up at high rpms... Cold start, engine will go up 2500rpms to warm up, then after it warms ups, goes back to normal rpms... What could be the problem...?

The engine's cold start system is not shutting itself off as quickly as it should or, another possibility is a defective over voltage protection relay.
Investigate these possibilities on the internet before attacking the engine.
