High Octane???

Just purchased a 1985 280SE, 137k mi. Afew days after purchase, started smelling gas. Changed brands. Didn't help so returned the car to the dealer who replaced the gasline. Still didn't help. So he has suggested a mechanic to look at at. I wanted to know if any has has problems like this or if you have any comments are suggestions it would be gresatly appreciated. Thanks

You probably got a gas leak... most likely to be at rear passenger side where fuel pump is...

Obviously this has nothing to do with the "kind" of gas used.

Probably a leak either under the hood or somewhere near the tank. check the connections from the fill pipe to the tank.

Is it worse when the windoes are open at low speeds? If so it's the rubber hoses at the back near the tank in all likelyhood. They've rotted away and are leaking. When the windows are open at low speed there's a partial vacuum inside the car and it sucks fumes fromthe trunk where they form.

Now, this applies o the 108 280SE but dollars to donuts is your problem here too.
