Is there anywhere I can find car configuration based on VIN?

Hi,

I have just acquired a '66 coupe that I want to restore to as much original look as possible.

My problem is that the driver's door is an replacement and the ID plate was not transferred :)

The car is painted red but under carpets and behind the back seat the paint is white(ish).

Is there anywhere I can find out the cars original configuration based solely on a VIN number?

Any help is appreciated!!

Bye

Soren

Before starting any restoration project, you'll need to do a lot of research. Start by getting The Red Book, or something similar. That lists what options were available in that year. And it will help you decipher the VIN codes. That will tell you pretty much every thing you need to know.

When it comes to restoration, unless it's a unique vehicle or you're going to compete, don't get hung up on the exact matching parts list. Use any Mustang color that strikes your fancy. Put in whatever interior you like. Make it like the Mustang you've always wanted.

Unfortunately, no.

The computer records were eraser prior to 1967. Marti Autoworks (Martiauto.com) is able to provide complete information for 67 and newer Fords.

You may be able to find buck tags hidden in different spots or even some paper work under thcarpet but that is as close as you'll get.

Good Luck on the restoration.

The vin is stamped on the right and left inner fender. (The left side in under the fender lip) The only information it gives is the year, assembly plant, body style and engine. The rest of the information probably is not available in the US. Interestingly, I was contacted by a guy in Canada inquiring about a 427 Fairlane I used to own. He had all of the information from the warranty plate of the car. He told me that Ford of Canada had access to US made vehicle information that was not available in the US. Good Luck Bill
