Mileage shows 14mpg on my 1983 small V-6 after trans replacement

The mechanic did what I suspected he would when I asked him to repair my transmission: he replaced it, and it is so slow now; it has to be revved to go through 2nd and 3rd. Every mechanic I've talked to says a transmission can't change how fast you go through the lower gears. I have a 3 speed automatic. This GLX used to drive like it was going downhill all the time: it just sprang ahead: Now it's slow and eating up my gasoline. The mechanic who did the job said he replaced the original transmission with an exact replica. What is going on?...

There is either a different problem occuring or the mechanic has inadvertently caused a new problem. Return to the shop and (calmly) explain the problem. If you atrat fingerpointing right off the bat, you will put the shop into a defensive position.... cornered animals are bad animals.

What you should get... a full explanation in plain English of the root cause of the concern.... If it is an artifact from the repair, expect an apology. It is difficult to find which shops are keepers and which shops are to be avoided but even good shops have bad days. Door rate should be the least of your concerns (we are $85.hr..... go to the city and some are pushing $125/hour).... The shop should be relatively clean and well equipped... good lighting is a must. The staff should be clean, courteous, and well educated... but mostly proud of their accomplishments and honest.

Check the fluid level just in case.

Maybe a vacuum line isn't connected?

I'm not a mechanic, though I have replaced brakes and peripheral things like radiators, alternators, and such, so I don't know if this is related to what you're talking about:

There is a vacuum pipe that circles the transmission and has other vaccuum components under the hood that it goes to, that has been sawn through and left in two. It was dragging on the ground until I stuck one end on something under there. Many mechanics have seen it, who were working on other things, and have not commented on it. I thought it wasn't important. IS IT?? It's sloppy work to say the least. I was told it was in the way of the trans work.
