Transmission replacement on my 83 mustang

I lost reverse gear, backing slowly in a parking lot: Bang! Then I took it in to be fixed to an independent transmission specialist. He told me he could fix it for $525. I thought a day and called to ask him if he is going to replace the transmission or fix it, and he said he decided to replace it because it had metal shavings in it. I asked if it will be replaced by an identical one, being as, I don't want one that is a dog, and he said yes. I took it for a test drive on the freeway and it now strains and winds with the peddle to the floor to go up an onramp. I've never had the peddle to the floor before. It can't be the same transmission! He says it is the only one that will fit it. The thing I loved about the original transmission is, it always felt like I was driving downhill; so effortless on the engine. Now it has to fight really hard to get speed. I suspect he put in a Fairmont tranny in it, but I'm sure someone here can give me information. What transmissions will go on a V-6 4.3? How do I id one? I want my original one back fixed...

Are you sure you've got an '83 V6??? ;)

Well... Sounds like he might be taking you for a ride. There should be several transmissions that will fit, a couple auto and at least a couple manual. Anything you can attach to a 5.0, pretty much.

Maybe a bad torque converter?

The Fairmont /probably/ used the same transmission, so I doubt that would be the problem.

4.3? Where did you find the extra half liter?

Good luck...

The 1983 3.8 V-6 had the C-5 transmission, which was used in that configuration from 1982 - 1986 Fox-bodied Fords/Mercs(Fairmont-based: Mustang-Capri,T-Bird-Cougar,Granada,Zephyr, small LTD-Marquis, etc.).

Don't push the new one hard until it is broken in. Check for other operational issues before blaming the tranny... take it back to the tech if it continues.

A warranteed used tranny can be found easily for $350.00 & under all day long...

I've had a lot of numbers from everywhere bouncing around in my head lately. I'm dizzy from it. I haven't been near the car for a while. I do my best to remember them.

How do I identify this trans so I can know.

The other one is much different than the two Fairmonts I have owned. This car was thrilling to drive: You touch the gas and it was like going downhill all the time.

It sounds like your TV cable is misadjusted a bit. Unless it is dialed in correctly, the engine will feel like it is struggling mightily; it will upshift too early and will not downshift unless your floor the accellerator pedal. Low line pressures can also cause overheating and premature wear of internal transmission components as well.

Return to the shop and ask the tech to re-evaluate the shift point adjustment.

Thanks. I've been hard worked all summer; I thought I forgot the year. It's an '83 alright.

I loved driving it because you could step on the gas a go like a search beam anyway to pointed that car. It goes right now. With this different used transmission, it just makes a lot of noise, goes pretty good, but really labors by comparison. Not high performance... This mechanic told me that the transmission can have no influence on how quick the car is at slower speeds. Is that true? I'll take the bad one back over the new one.
