Question about engine stand parts

Greetings all,

I was recently asked to create a CAD program to plasma cut some pieces out of 3/8" steel for a local company. I was told that they would allow a flat head V8, via the exhaust manifold bolt holes, to be placed on an engine stand. It allows the motor to be held from the side rather than the back from what I was told. My question is, anyone seen anything like this? I searched Jegs, Summit, JC Whitney and a few more sites to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Jim C Roberts

JS,

Price.

I was paid fairly for the "drafting", however I got screwed when I burnt the guy out a few of them for demos, I feel. I know, I know, nobody's fault but mine, what do you expect from a guy named "Honest Charlie"? I am wondering what a set of these would cost, that will give me a starting point to work from when the guy comes back wanting more.

Thanks JS, Jim

PS I thought it was odd to hold the motor up the heads too. JR

Obviously I'm not either, Dinsdale! :)

Yep that's what I burnt out, the plate that is. The neck is to be welded later.

Not sure what the market would be for something like this. Not too many flat heads still running around. Not only that, if they're anything like a normal engine (showing my ignorance), the exhaust manifold bolt holes are in the head... meaning you can't take the head off or the engine will fall.

For whatever reason, this company has a need for it. I'm curious as to why you're looking around for another one?

I would quess that they want to set up the engine as a display. Otherwise it would be impractical to mount an engine this way unless they have something else in mind. You need to find a flathead and take measurments of the hole locations angles and so forth to design the stand. I think flathead exhaust exits through the block btw.

The price I gathered for something like this was $45-50.

I never saw an actual product you could buy...just what pe>

I wont say a word, JS,.. about "flathead" and where the exhaust ports are..

NOW as to WHY bolt the engine to a stand by sidemounts..

Simple... look at EARLIER flatheads. There was no such thing as a bell- housing, half was cast with the block, half with the tranny and it was common to assemble the whole thing before dropping it into the car.

I still do it that way, whenever possible.

Just showing my youth and ignorance, I suppose. I learn a lot on this group... that being one of the things...

I had to look on "howstuffworks.com" to figure out how a wankel/rotary engine works... do you think they have flathead stuff there?

Dont bother... if you could figger out how a wankel works from those diagrams, you're fully capable of figuring out a flathead, Only difference is instead of pushrods, on top the tappets is an adjustor, right above that, the valve stem. Valve seat is in the block.. Intake passages in block are pretty straight, exhaust has to route around cylinder.

dual water pumps for additonal flow as well as ease of pump design
